False Reporting on NHL Gambling Scandal
Yesterday, The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. reported that former hockey star and current coach of the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, Wayne Gretsky, was caught on a wiretap talking to his assistant coach Rick Tocchet about the gambling game scandal that has rocked the sporting world. However, the article in The Star-Ledger indicated that the conversation about the gambling game scandal had taken place before the police exposed the sports betting ring, which has turned out to be erroneous.
The conversation, reporters are now saying, took place after the police had already exposed the gambling game ring to the public. However, the damage has already been done; the erroneous report set off a media circus, with reporters questioning Gretsky’s claims that he was unaware of the gambling game ring allegedly run by his best friend, and even his very character.
Gretzky has denied any knowledge of the gambling game ring and, so far, there is no evidence that he was involved. His wife Janet Jones, however, has been accused of placing $100,000 in bets, including on this year’s Super Bowl, over a period of several weeks.
Gretzky is the hockey commissioner for the current Turin Olympics. Yesterday, he told reporters that he would be taking his wife to the games with him. “It’s a dead issue for me now,” Mr. Gretzky said about the gambling game fiasco. “I remain supportive of my friend and obviously for my wife. . . . Life goes forward.”

According to Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council of Problem Gambling, online gambling represents a new and harsh threat to the recovery of addicted gamblers.
