Online Gambling is Dangerous
Experts say that the new wave of online gambling is particularly dangerous for those who already have compulsive gambling disorders.
According to Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council of Problem Gambling, online gambling represents a new and harsh threat to the recovery of addicted gamblers.
“It’s a new form of access to gambling, not a new form of gambling,” he said. “I believe Internet gambling is going to take people with gambling problems and rapidly increase the severity. They are going to rack up more debt more quickly.”
Social alienation may exacerbate the negative effects of online gambling. Addicted online gamblers, as their conditions worsen, spend more and more time at home alone, which in turn takes them away from the friends and family are crucial to recovery.
“[Alienation] will exacerbate the severity, and relapse is going to be more of a problem,” Whyte said.
Owners of online gambling sites deny the accusations that their industry might be dangerous for some. Online gambling, they say, is at least as safe, and probably safer, than gambling in land casinos. Online gambling sites collect a great deal of information from players, they say, and subsequently are able to identify problem gamblers much more easily that land casinos. There is even one site that employs a recovered gambling addict to track customers’ playing habits and contact those suspected of gambling problematically.
